I am one of those fortunate enough to have lived adjacent to Cape Canaveral during the Mercury program, where my father worked, and this childhood situation no doubt fostered my lifelong interests and hobbies. Many critics tend to commend the movie for its values, family, and inspirational aspects. Yet what makes the film so endearing is the relationship between the characters. That tag line is true. It grabbed me even then. Not the greatest movie ever made, but one of the best family movies in a long time. Launch of their largest rocket yet the Miss Riley is the last scene of the film. Good storytelling, authentic emotions and period atmosphere.

Their first rocket blows a hole in the picket fence in front of Homer's house. At first, I was disappointed that the film did not continue with Homer's life. The tale of Homer Hickham and his dream of creating a rocket seem so simple at first, especially when the film is set in a mining town, where the future is as clear cut as the lumps of coal in the mine.
Two other boys get involved: Roy Lee Scott and O'Dell. As the crowd and the rest of the town looks up to the skies, John slowly puts his hand on Homer's shoulder and smiles, showing Homer that he is proud of him. October Sky does not illustrate good parenting; rather, it evokes the realization that since parents have only a limited vision of how to shape their children's future, the job requires a huge amount of love and a lot of divine assistance. It doesn't tie everything up in a nice bow. At its widest theater release, 1,702 theaters were showing the movie.
The hacking coughs of the miners and the blackened faces were a constant reminder of the danger the miners faced in their work. This movie has deep values. Later, Homer is inspired to look at a rocket science book Miss Riley has given him, learning how to calculate the trajectory of a rocket. The father of the family next to me asked to borrow my spare paper napkin to wipe his tears. But I did read Willy Ley's Rockets, Missiles and Space Travel three or four times, and Arthur Clarke's The Making of a Moon. The love and support of Miss Riley is evident as well.
I did read a short story by Hickam which was apparently the seed that started him on the novel. Yet as in any true to life story, there are many stops along the way. A small switching yard allowed the filmmakers and actors to film the scenes with the boys on the rail road and gave them freedom to do as they pleased, even tear apart tracks. Born in a dirt-poor mining town in West Virginia, Hickam's destiny was written in coal dust: He'd follow his father into the mines, mortgage himself to the company store and work until an accident or black lung disease killed him. It was 1957 and Russia had just launched Sputnik. Stephenson urged him to do so. The movie received a positive critical reception and is still celebrated in the regions of its setting and filming.
As others have experienced at this excellent film, I was choked up at the end and had to wipe away the tears. If it has done its job, you won't want it to end. This film can be considered a complete work. Watching Homer get out the trig book, I was reminded how rarely high school movies have anything to do with school--with how an education is a ticket to freedom. While their first launches are failures, they experiment with new fuels and designs and eventually succeed. The weather of east Tennessee gave the filmmakers trouble and delayed production of the film. Review aggregator reports that 91% out of 74 critics gave the film a positive review, with a rating average of 7.
